Drifting Title Sequence
The long awaited follow up to my old “Grunge Tutorial”. Learn how to use multiple nulls and parenting to simplify an otherwise complex camera move. Then use Particular and some additional effects to dress up the scene.

Clean sweet tutorial.
Some things are really worth repeating.
Thanx

Good stuff, I dunno if I’d recommend adding the texture using track mattes, because not only are they slightly grungy, they’re slightly transparent as well… unless of course that’s what you’re looking for.
That was the plan… I’ll do more follow ups with different ideas, like using preserve transparency so the transparency is not modified. But, I’m not bothered by a small amount of transparency.
great tutorial, love the easy volumetrics and the 3d lens flare…and in only 20 minutes!
great tutorial, short and well covered.
Love your tutorials, you always present really solid technique and very nice and clean design.
thanx man for this amazing turorial
i love all your tutorials and techniques. i was wondering if you can do a tutorial on 3d camera mapping using 2d picture. i saw a tutorial on camera mapper using digieffect camera mapper plugin. can it be done easily just using without the plugin? thanks!

Great tutorial!
Now if I can just figure out a way to simulate the volumetric cloud effect you’ve done, WITHOUT using Particular… Gonna have to give in and buy it eventually…
Cheers!
hey! thanks great tutorial and for sure very nice title style. Anyway, the tool ” camera+cam null+ drift null” is very tricky to use and understand (i’m novice). i’ll try with sure target or something like that but i definitly like the design. thank one more!
Thankx so much for the tip Harry. Just by adding this drift most of my graphics work suddenly seem very fluid and smooth.
Thankx for sharing and also starting up Motion exchange, I am already a member now
Harry,
I just watched your tutorial and made my own exercise comp.
One thing that annoyed me is I can’t seem to add any color to the titels.
I mean I added some grunge and made the text layer luma.
The funny part is if you color correct the grunge ( I did this with the levels). it works fine,
but that means switching the eye icon on of the grunge layer and tit makesit not a luma anymore… of course.
So I tried to color correct the titel but that doesn’t seem to work either( which is logical I guess feeding of the grunge layer…
Is there a button I pushed or not pushed??
Looks nice with the lensflares..
Thanks,
Tim

Hi Tim. You should be able to color correct the luma matter layer without turning it on. Track mattes are rendered after effects, so any LUMINANCE changes to the luma matte layer will change the matte applied to the text. If it is not working, a little screen capture of your screen might help.

Hey Harry.
Very inspiring and smooth looking tutorial.
I just wonder if I add I feel more titles to the sequence, is particular capable of reach the whole thing?
Anyways, thank you so much for sharing your technique.
Regards.

Niceone Harry!
you can even drift with the ‘linear’ expression
to the position expression:
linear(time, inPoint, outPoint, value, value-[0,0,500])
one null less
Bring the totally pure awsomeness!
daha
sorry, i mean:
linear(time, inPoint, outPoint, value, value-[0,0,500]) if you are applying this extression to an object (text layer ot whatever)
but
linear(time, inPoint, outPoint, value, value+[0,0,500]) if you are applying this to the camera
inPoint and outPoint meaning the layer’s in and out points
(it would be nice if i could edit my last comment. but anyway this site roxx)
Hi Harry,
Sorry for the late response, but I had a lot on my mind these days.
I think I couldn’t solve the luma color correction so hence my screenpics.
( I am referring to an older comment I left you on dec. 12th).
The only thing I was able to do was to add some brightness and contrast to the luma via levels.
No color at all.( may be I should try it via curves…).
Please take your time as this is merely an excercise,
Thanks,
Tim

Wonderful tutorial of a great looking effect!
I am using it in our next infomercial. I was looking for something like this, and thought it would be too difficult, but now I managed to do something nice looking right away!
Many thanks!

Thanks for this really cool tutorial, I will be back for more soon and I liked how my version turned out so I posted it on my blog.
You can check it out here:

Thanks again!
hi, great stuff.
one question about calculating speed of parented objects… im wondering if its possible to calculate the actual speed of project camera when its nested within few animated independently nulls. somehow with toWorld/toComp functions maybe?
thanks!
