Teen Choice Awards 09

I worked with the design team at Blur to create the in-show graphics and 1.5 minute show open for the 2009 Teen Choice Awards on Fox. My role was to integrate into the Blur team, working with Art Director Norn Jordan and animator Colin James to bring the designs to life in 1080i/59.94 fps.

Client: Blur Studio, Venice, CA

I love the concept, and I love how you kept it 2D or at least mostly 2D. I do have one question; how do one go about creating those swirlys seen animated throughout the video. I’ve always been curious about the effect, and I just can not wrap my head around the process.

Well anyway, I like the work a lot. And it is really nice to see some of the work that you’ve done outside of tutorials, it truly creates a new found respect for you as a designer.

    Thanks,

    JMonrowe

It’s done in Cinema 4D using Spline Wrap. It’s actually pretty simple. Spline Wrap will wrap geometry along a spline. In this case, I used a Capsule and Spline Wrapped it along a Helix spline. That’s the basic idea.

    Hi,

Really liked that one, especially the color palette.
Speaking of 3D, if I want to get started in a 3D program where would you suggest I get started?

Anyway, love your site. Thanks for all the inspiration and help I get trough your tutorials.

Thanks Klas! The credit there really goes to Norn, the Art Director that was in charge of that project. She did a fantastic job designing this for the target audience, as well as making it manageable for the animators to crank out so much stuff for a live show.

Regarding starting out in 3D, I can’t recommend Cinema 4D enough. It’s not perfect for EVERY job, but for motion design it is a dream. I learned by taking a small class with Kai Pederson from Maxon, and then watched as many tutorials I can on Cineversity. I also got some lessons from CMIvfx.

If you can afford it, I’d suggest enrolling in fxphd and checking out Tim Claphams courses on Cinema 4D.

I have been looking into cinema4D. Will I get by on a standard version?
I know there are many different add-ons like the mograph. Because I can´t afford the studio version.
    What do you think?

I started with Cinema + Mograph, then added Advanced Render. Then moved up from there. If you can at least go for Cinema & mograph, I’d recommend that. Or just download the demo which works for 42 days or something like that? It’s a very long trial period.

    Thanks for the tip!
Yeah, Cinema with Mograph sounds like a good starting point.
I looked at the tutorials at Cineversity, that was really good stuff.

    Thanks again for everything!!

Really really cool!!! I’m hopping to get to this quality soon!!!
By the way in the second 52,53 where Darren Kagasoff appears it shows the end of the photo cut, in the lower part of his photo, looks cutted! It’s an error or it doesn’t matter to the design? Thanks!!!

  8. Ahhh jajaja! Nice answer! You are awesome!!! Thanks for helping newbies like me with your tutorials! Keep the great job!!!

I’m trying to stick with Flash to make things more flexible for the greater community. You can watch it using QuickTIme here:
