Quick Tip #4 | X Marks the Spot

Working with a LOT of layers? Often with heavy comps, it would be great to put your current layer at the top of the composition, rather than buried down the list. Shy layers is one solution. A quicker one: select the layer and hit “x”. This will bring that layer to the top of the timeline window.

Great tip! What happens if I want to maintain that order and send that layer back to it’s original location after making adjustments?

It does pretty much snap back when you click anywhere else. Typically, I select a layer, hit X, then hit command + ~ to expand the layer. Then from there, it will just move everything back to the original stack. I do wish “X” was a little more sticky of a command. This is one of the few things in CS4 that is pretty cool, which is a timeline search function, which allows you to isolate any parameter by text.

I don“t know why but this is not working with me. I hit x and nothing happens.
