Hi Harry. I just found this post and it was a great read as I'm just starting to take on more freelance work. Thanks for giving so much back to the motion graphics community, it’s very appreciated. I’m trying figure out what my rates should be and up till now have been doing hourly. I like the idea of a day rate system but have some questions about it. How many hours are included in that day rate, 8, or the 10 you mentioned above? Is a lunch / or break included in that anywhere? Should there be an overtime rate if the deadline is tight and I need to exceed the amount of hours for the day rate? If I quoted a job to take a day and underestimated the amount of work involved, do I charge for the extra time it took / if it took less time do I subtract that from the day rate? If a client needs me to work on a holiday should I charge more? (Can you tell I’m coming from a unionized workplace) I have so many questions but I don’t want to abuse you generosity. Thanks for your time.

A day rate is far more common. Although I have charged an hourly rate in the past on jobs where I know the hours are going to meet or exceed 10 hours a day. By far, though, a day rate is the most common way to charge a client.

This type of article is much appreciated esp. for newbies like myself that are thinking about going at it alone. Tons of great info and insight. Thanks a lot.

Question. When it comes to charging. Is a day rate more used than hourly?
